Use gestures

Scroll over the notch to change the volume, and turn on swiping left or right to skip songs and dragging the album art into other apps.

The notch answers a few gestures, so you can change what’s playing without opening it, or share it with another app.

Change the volume

Scroll up or down over the notch, with two fingers on a trackpad or with your mouse’s wheel. Up is louder, and down is quieter. It works even with the notch closed, and it’s on from the start.

Swipe to skip

Swiping is off at first.

  1. Right-click the notch, or click the Warble icon in the menu bar, and choose Settings….
  2. Choose Notch.
  3. Turn on Swipe over the notch to skip.

Then point at the notch and swipe:

  • Left with two fingers skips to the next song.
  • Right goes back.

One swipe skips one song, however far it goes. On a Mac with a Force Touch trackpad, you feel a light tick as it skips. Swiping works whether the notch is closed or open, and does nothing while nothing is playing.

Left and right mean the way your fingers move, whichever scroll direction you’ve set in System Settings › Trackpad.

Drag the album art out

Dragging the art is off at first.

  1. Right-click the notch, or click the Warble icon in the menu bar, and choose Settings….
  2. Choose Notch.
  3. Turn on Drag the album art out of the player.

Then share what’s playing:

  1. Point at the notch to open the player.
  2. Press on the album art and, keeping the button held, drag it out of the notch.
  3. Drop it where you want it, such as a message, a note, a document or a folder.

The player stays open while you drag. What you get depends on where you drop it:

  • A folder or the desktop gets the picture as a file, named after the song.
  • A message, a note or a document gets the picture.
  • A text box or a browser’s address bar gets a link to the song, when the app playing gives one.

A click on the art, without dragging, still brings the app that’s playing to the front.
